Gongju and then Buyeo were the last capitals of Baekje, the kingdom that passed on Buddhism, Chinese writing and temple building techniques to Japan before being destroyed in 660. King Muryeong’s intact tomb, opened in 1971, yielded more than four thousand objects. The heavily indented coast has some of the strongest tides in Asia, exposing kilometres of mudflats worked for shellfish and salt.
