Yokohama was a hamlet when the 1858 treaties made it Japan’s opening port: the city gained the first daily newspaper, the first gas lamp and the largest Chinatown in Asia outside China. Kamakura, further south, was the seat of the first shogunate from 1185 to 1333, and Hakone, backed onto an active volcano, remains the thermal escape of Tokyoites.
