The 1883 treaty made Incheon the first port open to foreigners: Chinese, Japanese and Westerners opened concessions there, of which Korea’s only official Chinatown survives. It was here that the September 1950 landing, a risky operation led by MacArthur, reversed the course of the war. Songdo, a new city built on reclaimed land since 2003, serves as a showcase for Korean smart urbanism.
