Ceded to Britain in 1842 after the first Opium War and returned to China in 1997 under the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong built one of the world’s largest ports and financial centres on a resourceless rock. The constraint of its terrain produced the most vertical city on the planet, where forty percent of the territory is country park. Its cinema, from King Hu to Wong Kar-wai, marked the history of the medium.
