Gyeongju was the capital of Silla for nearly a thousand years, from 57 BCE to 935, and keeps its royal tumulus tombs, Bulguksa temple and the Seokguram grotto: the whole city is sometimes called a museum without walls. Andong, further north, remained the bastion of Neo-Confucianism, with Hahoe village and its academies. The province is also the country’s most rural and most electorally conservative.
