The Taebaek range runs the length of the province and cuts it in two: an inland side of farming valleys, a coastal side of cliffs and beaches. Pyeongchang hosted the 2018 Winter Games, whose opening ceremony saw the two Koreas march together. The province, the least populated in the country outside Jeju, was granted special autonomous status in 2023 to offset the restrictions tied to its proximity to the border.
