Nongshim means "the farmer's heart". Founded in 1965 by the younger brother of Lotte's founder, the company established itself with two products Korea still eats every week: the 1971 Shrimp Cracker and above all the 1986 Shin Ramyun, whose character 辛 simply means "spicy".

Shin Ramyun became the world's most exported ramyun, sold in around a hundred countries and made in the United States as well as China. Its rise accelerated after the film Parasite, which introduced jjapaguri — the home-made blend of two of the brand's instant noodles, now a dish in its own right.
