Don Quijote (ドン・キホーテ)

The all-night bazaar whose disorder is a deliberate commercial strategy.

Founded
1989
Headquarters
Tokyo, Japan
Parent company
Pan Pacific International Holdings
Sector
Retail

Nicknamed Donki, the chain stacks goods floor to ceiling in narrow aisles, under garish handwritten signage and a looping jingle. The chaos has an in-house name: "compression display". The idea is that difficulty in finding a product lengthens the visit and triggers impulse buying.

Often open twenty-four hours a day, Donki sells cosmetics as readily as cosplay costumes, suitcases, electronics and food. It has become a compulsory stop for foreign tourists in Japan, to the point that the group has opened stores in Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok under the name Don Don Donki.
