The Japanese title, Biohazard, had to be changed for the West: the name was already trademarked in the United States by a New York hardcore band. Released in 1996, Shinji Mikami's game popularised an entire genre by imposing a counter-intuitive rule: make the player weak, short of bullets, and force them to run.
The series reinvented itself twice. Resident Evil 4, in 2005, moved the camera over the shoulder and redefined third-person action for an entire decade. Resident Evil 7, in 2017, returned to first person and a single house after instalments that had grown too spectacular. Over a hundred and fifty million copies sold, and a long run of films.
