Stretched along the Pacific between Tokyo and Nagoya, Shizuoka combines Fuji’s southern slope, the Izu peninsula and Suruga Bay, which drops to 2,500 metres and yields deep-water shrimp. The Makinohara hills form Japan’s largest tea-growing area. Hamamatsu in the west gave birth to Yamaha, Kawai, Roland and Suzuki: instruments and motorbikes grew from the same workshop culture.
