Takachiho is held to be where Amaterasu withdrew into a cave, plunging the world into darkness, the founding episode of Shinto myth that villagers have re-enacted nightly in kagura dances for centuries. The subtropical coast made Miyazaki a honeymoon destination in the 1960s, before Hawaii, and its output of chicken, wagyū beef and mangoes remains among the country’s largest.
