At 8:15 on 6 August 1945 a bomb detonated five hundred metres above Hiroshima; the city, rebuilt around a Peace Memorial Park, has made that the core of its municipal and diplomatic identity. The prefecture also opens onto the Seto Inland Sea and its hundreds of islands, including Miyajima with its torii standing in the water, and produces two-thirds of Japan’s oysters.
