Thirteen million inhabitants, more than Seoul itself: Gyeonggi absorbs the capital’s growth in a ring of new towns. To the south, Hwaseong fortress, built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo to honour his father, applied engineering principles that set a precedent. To the north, the province touches the demilitarised zone, a four-kilometre strip that has accidentally become one of Asia’s best-preserved nature reserves.
