A local saying goes that there are never three fine days, three flat li or three silver coins: Guizhou was long China’s poorest province. Its mountains sheltered dozens of peoples, Miao, Dong, Bouyei, whose villages, drum towers and embroidered costumes form a dense heritage. The town of Maotai distils the country’s most prestigious baijiu. The world’s largest radio telescope, FAST, has occupied a natural sinkhole here since 2016.
