Closer to Seoul than to Tokyo, Fukuoka served as the gateway for exchanges with China and Korea, and it is here that the Mongol fleets failed twice, in 1274 and 1281. The city is now Kyūshū’s most dynamic, with the only notable population growth in western Japan, and defends its yatai, mobile stalls that set up on the pavements at night.
