Landlocked in the centre of the country, the province lives on farming, ginseng and a dense Buddhist heritage. In 1377 Heungdeok temple in Cheongju printed the Jikji using movable metal type, seventy-eight years before the Gutenberg Bible; the only surviving volume is held at the National Library of France. The Chungju reservoir and the cliffs of Danyang form the most visited landscapes.
