The northern tip of Honshū, Aomori grows more than half of Japan’s apples and holds Shirakami-Sanchi, a World Heritage virgin beech forest. The Sannai-Maruyama site documents a six-thousand-year-old Jōmon village, and every August the Nebuta festival hauls multi-tonne lantern floats through the prefectural capital.
