Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the beating heart of contemporary Japanese culture. With 14 million inhabitants in its 23 special wards and 37 million in the greater metropolitan area, it is the world's largest megalopolis.

Founded as Edo in 1457, the city became the capital of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603. Renamed Tokyo ('Eastern Capital') in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration, it survived the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923) and the devastating bombings of World War II. Postwar reconstruction transformed Tokyo into an ultramodern metropolis, hosting the Olympic Games in 1964 and 2021.

Each Tokyo district has a distinct identity: Shinjuku is the administrative and commercial center with its skyscrapers and the Kabukicho entertainment quarter; Shibuya is the crossroads of youth and fashion with its famous pedestrian crossing; Akihabara is the mecca of electronics, anime, and manga; Harajuku is the birthplace of Japanese street fashion; Asakusa preserves old Tokyo's atmosphere with Senso-ji temple; Ginza is the luxury district; and Roppongi is the center of nightlife and contemporary art.

Tokyo is the city with the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, with over 200 distinguished establishments. From Tsukiji sushi to Shinjuku ramen, traditional izakaya to haute kaiseki cuisine, Tokyo's culinary diversity is unparalleled. The Toyosu fish market (successor to Tsukiji) is the world's largest fish market.

Tokyo is the epicenter of Japanese pop culture. Akihabara concentrates manga, anime, and figurine shops. Ikebukuro's Otome Road is a paradise for female otaku fans. Odaiba offers futuristic attractions. Studio Ghibli has its own museum in Mitaka, and Nakano Broadway is a temple of vintage otaku goods.

Tokyo's transportation network is among the densest and most punctual in the world. The JR train system, subway (13 lines), and private railways carry over 40 million passengers daily. Shinjuku Station holds the world record for daily passenger volume.
