Honor of Kings (王者荣耀)

The world's highest-grossing game, played by a hundred million Chinese a day.

Released in 2015, Honor of Kings adapts the MOBA — five on five, three lanes, towers — to mobile and to fifteen-minute matches. Its heroes are drawn from Chinese history and mythology: the poet Li Bai, Diaochan, the Monkey King, which earned the game as much popular success as official criticism over its handling of historical figures.

It has for several years been the highest-grossing game in the world, ahead of every Western title. Its dominance also made visible China's regulation of minors' playing time, applied to it first: Tencent built in facial recognition to verify the age of night-time players.
