Jingdezhen has fired porcelain since the Han and supplied the imperial court from the eleventh century: local kaolin, forests for the kilns and the river for shipping fixed an industry there that flooded the world with blue and white. Elsewhere the province is mountainous and red with history: at Jinggangshan Mao set up his first rural base in 1927, and at Nanchang the uprising that founded the Red Army broke out.
