Hyōgo touches two seas and holds opposite landscapes: the cosmopolitan port of Kobe, opened in 1868 and rebuilt after the 1995 earthquake that killed 6,400 people, the rice fields of Tanba, Awaji island and the Arima hot springs. The Nada district of Kobe alone produces about a quarter of Japan’s sake, thanks to miyamizu water and yamada nishiki rice grown upstream.
