The Zhuang autonomous region takes its name from China’s largest minority, eighteen million people. Limestone, dissolved by tropical rain over millions of years, has left a forest of steep peaks between which the Li river winds. The rice terraces of Longsheng, cut from the thirteenth century onwards, climb to a thousand metres. The Vietnamese border runs along the south of the region.
