Daejeon did not exist before the Seoul-Busan line opened in 1905: a village of a few hundred people became the country’s fifth city within a century. The Daedeok science complex, created in 1973, gathers some thirty public institutes, the aerospace research institute and KAIST, Korea’s leading engineering school. The Yuseong spa district taps hot springs known since the fifteenth century.
