Must-see
The Fuji Five Lakes
Local specialty
Hōtō noodles, grapes, koshu wine

Landlocked and ringed by mountains on three sides, Yamanashi enjoys record sunshine that makes it Japan’s leading producer of grapes, peaches and wine, notably from the local koshu variety. The five lakes at the foot of Fuji frame the country’s most photographed silhouette. The prefecture matches the old province of Kai, domain of Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga’s feared rival.
