Between the Toyama Bay trench, plunging a thousand metres, and the ridges of the Northern Alps, the prefecture packs a rare vertical range. The Tateyama-Kurobe alpine route crosses it by funicular and trolleybus, between snowbanks that ploughs cut in spring into twenty-metre corridors. The bay supplies white shrimp and firefly squid, whose spring swarms light up the water.
