The region stretches east to west across nearly a quarter of China’s length, from the Hulunbuir grasslands to the dunes of the Badain Jaran desert. Mongols make up under twenty percent of the population, but the language remains co-official and the traditional vertical script, dropped in independent Mongolia in favour of Cyrillic, is still read on shop signs. Herding and coal drive the economy; milk and mutton, the cooking.
