The Manchus set their capital at Shenyang in 1625 before crossing the Great Wall and taking Beijing in 1644; the Shenyang imperial palace remains the only other surviving Qing palace. In the twentieth century the province became the country’s main steel basin, then faced the painful restructuring of the 1990s. Dalian, on the sea, keeps traces of its Russian and then Japanese past.
