The Yanbian autonomous prefecture in the east has close to eight hundred thousand Chinese Koreans, with bilingual schools, press and signage. To the south, Mount Changbai, called Paektu in Korean, carries a crater lake at its summit shared between China and North Korea, which holds a founding place in both countries’ mythologies. Changchun hosted the capital of Manchukuo, the Japanese puppet state of the 1930s.
