A crater lake at two thousand two hundred metres, sacred on both sides of the border.

The 946 eruption, one of the most violent of the last two millennia, left a caldera now filled by Lake Tianchi, "heavenly lake", three hundred and seventy-three metres deep and frozen five months a year. The China-Korea border runs across it. The Manchus placed the origin of their line here, Koreans that of Dangun, the kingdom’s mythical founder, and North Korean propaganda the birth of Kim Jong-il. The forest on the slopes shelters Siberian tigers and wild ginseng.
