The Yangtze delta has made Jiangsu one of China’s richest provinces for a thousand years: silk, salt, rice and scholar-officials. Suzhou built dozens of private gardens over the centuries, an art of miniature landscape codified down to the choice of stones. Nanjing was the Ming capital before Beijing, then the Republic’s, and holds the memorial to the 1937 massacre. The province is now a major industrial hub around Suzhou and Wuxi.
