The Bangudae Petroglyphs

Found in 1971 by a university team, the ten-by-three-metre panel carries close to three hundred carvings: deer, tigers, boars, hunters, and above all fifty-eight whales, some harpooned, others accompanied by calves. Dating is debated, placing the whole between the sixth and first millennia BCE. The Sayeon dam, built in 1965 before the discovery, floods the cliff several months a year; after decades of debate, a water-level regulation scheme was agreed. The site was inscribed as World Heritage in 2025.
