Five hundred and thirty thousand inhabitants, fewer than any other prefecture: Tottori lives off the Sea of Japan, snow crab and nashi pears. Its dunes, formed by sediment the Sendai river has carried for a hundred thousand years, stretch sixteen kilometres. Sakaiminato, birthplace of manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, turned its main street into a promenade lined with bronze yōkai.
