The Honam plain, the country’s largest flat expanse, made the province the peninsula’s granary and its cooking the most highly regarded. Jeonju, cradle of the royal Yi family, keeps eight hundred hanok houses in a single district and was named a UNESCO city of gastronomy. Namwon is tied to Chunhyangga, the most famous of the sung pansori epics.
