The Amur river, Heilongjiang in Chinese, "black dragon river", gives the province its name and its border with Russia. Harbin grew around the Russian Manchurian railway from 1898 and took in tens of thousands of Russians fleeing the revolution: Saint Sophia cathedral and Zhongyang avenue still show it. In January temperatures fall below minus thirty.
