Hebei surrounds Beijing and Tianjin without containing them, which long gave it the role of a military buffer: the Great Wall crosses its most famous passes here, including Shanhaiguan where it meets the sea. The Qing emperors built a five-hundred-and-sixty-hectare summer residence at Chengde, doubled by temples imitating Tibetan and Mongol architecture to receive their vassals.
