The country’s third-largest prefecture reads in three bands: the Hamadōri coast, the central valley and the Aizu basin, loyal to the shogunate until the 1868 siege and the Byakkotai episode, when teenage retainers took their own lives believing their castle ablaze. The prefecture’s name remains tied to the March 2011 nuclear accident, whose evacuation zone shrinks year by year.
