Anhui

Huangshan, the "yellow mountain", with peaks emerging from a sea of clouds, is the most depicted landscape in Chinese art; the Xin’an school painters made it a subject in its own right in the seventeenth century. Around it, the Huizhou villages, Hongcun and Xidi among them, keep an architecture of white walls and stepped gables built by merchants enriched by salt and tea. The province remains one of the most rural in eastern China.
