Eiichiro Oda has published One Piece every week since 1997, making it one of the longest-running series in manga history. Inspired by Red-Haired Shanks, the pirate who saved his life and entrusted him with his straw hat, Luffy sets sail at 17 to find the One Piece, the legendary treasure hidden somewhere along the Grand Line.

Their voyage takes them across the four seas, the Grand Line, and the New World, facing the Seven Warlords, the Four Emperors (Kaido, Big Mom, Shanks, Blackbeard), and the World Government. Each arc reveals a new island, culture, and set of stakes while progressively building an epic narrative about the world's hidden history, the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, and the true nature of the World Government.

One Piece celebrates freedom as the supreme value: each crew member pursues their personal dream, and it is the diversity of these dreams that makes the group strong. The work relentlessly critiques oppression, slavery, racism (illustrated through the fishmen), and governmental abuse of power. 'Nakama' (comradeship) is the beating heart of the series: Luffy never fights for treasure but to protect his friends and those he considers allies. Eiichiro Oda's manga has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since July 1997, making Oda one of the most prolific and consistent authors in manga history. The manga has over 110 published volumes and more than 1,100 chapters. The anime adaptation by Toei Animation, airing since October 1999, has over 1,100 episodes. The series has also spawned more than 15 theatrical films, including Film Red (2022), which grossed over 300 million dollars at the box office.
