Dōgo Onsen

The main building, a three-storey wooden maze crowned by a turret and a bronze heron, dates from 1894 and still works as a public bath: entry costs a few hundred yen. Upstairs the Yūshinden, finished in 1899, was reserved for imperial visits and can now be toured. Sōseki came here during his teaching year in Matsuyama and used it as a setting in Botchan. Studio Ghibli is said to have drawn on it for the bathhouse in Spirited Away, a lineage the city does not deny.
