Renamed Tokyo ('Eastern Capital') in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration, it survived the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923) and the devastating bombings of World War II. Postwar reconstruction transformed Tokyo into an ultramodern metropolis, hosting the Olympic Games in 1964 and 2021.
