Synopsis

Synopsis

Taki Tachibana, a Tokyo high school boy, and Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl living in the small fictional town of Itomori in Gifu Prefecture, begin intermittently swapping bodies during their sleep. Each must navigate the other's daily life, leaving messages on their phones and notebooks to communicate. Over time, they develop deep feelings for each other despite never having met in person.

When the swaps suddenly stop, Taki sets out to find Itomori and discovers a devastating truth: the town was destroyed three years earlier by a fragment of Comet Tiamat, killing most of its inhabitants including Mitsuha. Realizing their body swaps transcended time, Taki uses musubi, a sacred ritual from Mitsuha's shrine, to return to Mitsuha's body on the day of the disaster and attempt to save the town.

Themes

The film explores the Japanese concept of musubi (connection or tying), weaving together themes of fate, human connection and memory. The tradition of kumihimo (cord braiding) serves as a visual metaphor for the protagonists' intertwined lives. The film also addresses the tension between urban modernity and rural traditions, as well as collective grief tied to natural disasters, echoing the trauma of Japan's 2011 tsunami.

Production

Makoto Shinkai wrote and directed the film after several smaller-budget works including 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words. CoMix Wave Films produced the project on a budget of approximately 28 million dollars. The soundtrack composed and performed by rock band RADWIMPS became inseparable from the film, with tracks like Zenzenzense reaching the top of Japanese music charts. The animation combines hyperrealistic backgrounds of Tokyo and rural Japan with sumptuous dreamlike sequences.

Cultural Impact

Upon its release in August 2016, Your Name shattered Japanese box office records, surpassing Spirited Away in certain categories before establishing itself as a worldwide hit with over 380 million dollars in revenue. The film was nominated for numerous international awards and won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animated Film. It inspired renewed interest in real locations depicted in the film, particularly Hida Shrine and Lake Suwa. A live-action remake by Paramount Pictures was announced. The film's success paved the way for a new wave of mainstream theatrical anime, cementing Shinkai as one of the greatest contemporary animation directors.
