Synopsis

Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki, born January 5, 1941, in Tokyo, is a Japanese director, animator, screenwriter, and producer. Co-founder of Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Isao Takahata, he is unanimously considered the greatest master of world animation and one of the most important filmmakers in cinema history.

Youth and Training

Born during World War II, Miyazaki grew up in a family that manufactured military airplane parts, an experience that nourished his fascination with flight and aviation, omnipresent in his films. His mother, suffering from tuberculosis and hospitalized for long periods, inspired the absent mother character found in My Neighbor Totoro and other works. After studying political economy, he joined Toei Animation studio in 1963.

Early Career

At Toei, Miyazaki participated in several TV and film productions, notably Horus, Prince of the Sun (1968) with Isao Takahata. He then worked on the Heidi series (1974) and Future Boy Conan (1978). His first feature film as director, The Castle of Cagliostro (1979), a Lupin III film, already revealed his mastery of action and adventure staging. The success of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), his first personal project, led to the creation of Studio Ghibli.

Studio Ghibli

Founded in 1985 with Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli became the most prestigious animation studio in the world. Miyazaki directed a series of masterpieces that redefined animation: Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Porco Rosso (1992), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), and The Wind Rises (2013).

Style and Philosophy

Miyazaki's work is distinguished by strong and independent heroines, deep ecological concern, refusal of moral simplism, and constant wonder at nature and flight. His films blend everyday realism and dreamlike fantasy with unmatched fluidity. He is famous for his insistence on hand-drawn animation and his skepticism toward digital animation. Each frame is treated as an individual work of art.

Awards and Recognition

Miyazaki received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away (2003), the Golden Bear at Berlin, and an Honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 2014 from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He has also received numerous honors in Japan and is recognized worldwide as one of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Retirements

Miyazaki has announced his retirement multiple times (notably after Princess Mononoke and The Wind Rises) only to return each time. His film The Boy and the Heron (2023) confirmed that he remains a tireless creator, unable to stop imagining new worlds.
