Synopsis
In a world where alchemy is a full-fledged science, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric attempt as children to resurrect their deceased mother through human transmutation — alchemy's supreme taboo. The attempt fails catastrophically: Edward loses his left arm and right leg, while Alphonse's soul is torn from his body. Edward manages to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor by sacrificing his right arm. Fitted with automail (mechanical prosthetics), Edward becomes the youngest State Alchemist in history, earning the title 'Fullmetal Alchemist.'
The two brothers travel across the country of Amestris searching for the Philosopher's Stone, the only artifact capable of transcending the laws of equivalent exchange and restoring their bodies. Their quest draws them into a vast conspiracy involving the Homunculi — artificial beings embodying the seven deadly sins (Lust, Gluttony, Pride, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy) — who have been manipulating Amestris's military government from the shadows.
The plot expands to a national and then transnational scale, revealing that the entire country was designed as a gigantic transmutation circle by an ancient being called 'Father,' the first Homunculus. The Elric brothers assemble a coalition of soldiers, alchemists, and Ishbalan warriors to confront this existential threat in an epic climax.
Themes
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood explores the law of equivalent exchange as a metaphor for the human condition: every gain has a cost. The work addresses grief, scientific hubris, moral responsibility, and brotherhood. Criticism of militarism, genocide (the Ishbal conflict, paralleling colonial atrocities), and political manipulation runs throughout the narrative. Despite these dark themes, the work maintains a fundamental optimism: human bonds triumph over excessive ambition.
Production
Hiromu Arakawa's manga was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan from July 2001 to June 2010, spanning 27 volumes. A first anime adaptation by Bones in 2003 (51 episodes) had diverged from the then-unfinished manga. Brotherhood, launched in April 2009, faithfully adapts the entire manga under director Yasuhiro Irie, with a soundtrack by Akira Senju. The series is distinguished by its consistently high animation quality, brisk pacing, and ability to balance humor, action, and emotion.
Cultural Impact
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood long held the top spot on MyAnimeList, becoming the benchmark against which all anime is measured. The work is recognized for its exemplary writing: strong, active female characters (Riza Hawkeye, Olivier Armstrong, Izumi Curtis), a coherent magic system, and a satisfying finale that honors every narrative arc. The franchise has spawned films, video games, and live-action adaptations.
