Synopsis

Synopsis

In a world where humanity lives behind three concentric gigantic walls, Titans — giant, mindless humanoid creatures — roam outside, devouring any human in their path. Eren Jaeger, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert grow up in the Shiganshina District on the outskirts of Wall Maria. Their lives are shattered when a sixty-meter Colossal Titan smashes through the wall gate, allowing Titans to invade the town. Eren watches helplessly as his mother is killed and swears to exterminate every last Titan.

The three friends enlist in the Survey Corps, a military unit that ventures beyond the walls. Eren discovers he possesses the power to transform into a Titan himself, a power that makes him both humanity's hope and a potential threat. Through their missions, the trio uncovers the truth about the Titans, the history of the world, and the origins of the walls — a truth far more complex and darker than their society has taught them.

The plot grows considerably more intricate as new human enemies emerge and the geopolitics of the world beyond the walls are revealed. The nation of Marley, the Eldians, and the power of the Nine Titans weave a narrative of betrayal, moral dilemmas, and questions about freedom, oppression, and the cycle of violence. The final season pushes Eren toward radical choices that deeply divide both the characters and the audience.

Themes

Attack on Titan explores themes of unusual depth for a shonen series: freedom versus oppression, determinism versus free will, cycles of hatred between peoples, propaganda and historical manipulation, and the blurred line between hero and monster. The work interrogates human nature through the lens of war, genocide, and survival, without offering simple answers.

Production

Hajime Isayama's original manga was serialized in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from September 2009 to April 2021, spanning 34 volumes. The anime adaptation launched in April 2013 by WIT Studio under director Tetsuro Araki, with a memorable soundtrack by Hiroyuki Sawano. Starting with the final season (2020), production shifted to studio MAPPA under director Yuichiro Hayashi. The series concluded in November 2023 with the 'The Final Chapters' special.

Cultural Impact

Attack on Titan became a global cultural phenomenon, reigniting Western interest in anime. The manga has sold over 110 million copies worldwide. The series has spawned video games, spin-offs, exhibitions, and even theme park attractions in Japan. Its success contributed to the rise of darker, more mature anime in the 2010s and 2020s.
