Synopsis
Gon Freecss, a 12-year-old boy living on Whale Island, discovers that his father Ging, whom he believed dead, is actually a legendary Hunter. Hunters are elite licensed individuals who track treasures, rare creatures, or other humans. Determined to find his father, Gon leaves his island to take the Hunter Exam, a brutal selection process with a high mortality rate.
During the exam, Gon meets his future companions: Killua Zoldyck, a boy his age from the world's most famous assassin family, seeking to escape his destiny; Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta Clan, whose eyes turn scarlet with emotion, seeking revenge against the Phantom Troupe that massacred his people; and Leorio Paladiknight, a good-hearted aspiring doctor. Together, they face deadly trials.
The story unfolds in distinct arcs, each radically shifting genre: the Hunter Exam (survival/adventure), Heavens Arena and Nen training (martial arts/fantasy), Yorknew City (crime thriller with the Phantom Troupe), Greed Island (video game isekai), and the Chimera Ant arc (horror/war with existential themes). This last arc, often considered the pinnacle of the work, follows the invasion of an extremely powerful humanoid insect species and explores the boundary between humanity and monstrosity.
Themes
Hunter x Hunter constantly subverts shonen expectations. Gon, despite his appearance as an innocent hero, reveals dark and obsessive sides. The work explores moral ambiguity, the blurred nature of good and evil, and the psychological cost of the pursuit of power. The Nen system, with its categories (Emitter, Transmuter, Specialist...) and strategic limitations, is considered one of the most elaborate power systems in manga. The Gon-Killua relationship explores friendship with rare emotional depth.
Production
Yoshihiro Togashi's manga has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since March 1998 but is famous for its prolonged hiatuses due to the author's health issues. With 37 volumes published, the manga remains ongoing despite multi-year pauses. A first anime adaptation by Nippon Animation aired from 1999 to 2001 (62 episodes). The 2011 Madhouse version, directed by Hiroshi Koujina, is the definitive adaptation, covering all available material through the Election arc. Yoshihisa Hirano's soundtrack contributes to the unique atmosphere of each arc.
Cultural Impact
Hunter x Hunter is considered by many critics and mangaka as the best-written shonen of all time. The Chimera Ant arc is regularly cited as the greatest narrative arc in manga history. The work has influenced a generation of mangaka, notably Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen) who cites Togashi as his primary inspiration. Togashi's chronic hiatuses have become a cultural meme in the manga community, and every announcement of a return generates worldwide excitement.
