Mo Dao Zu Shi is a Chinese web novel written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, published between 2015 and 2016 on the JJWXC platform. This work has become one of the most influential in Chinese web literature and launched a worldwide media phenomenon.

Synopsis

Wei Wuxian, a genius cultivator, invented a path of demonic cultivation that earned him the hatred of the entire world. Betrayed and killed, he is mysteriously resurrected thirteen years later in the body of a young man. He reunites with Lan Wangji, an elite cultivator who was once his rival and nemesis, and together they investigate a series of mysteries involving dismembered bodies, vengeful spirits, and an ancient conspiracy that led to Wei Wuxian's downfall.

World and Cultivation System

The story takes place in a xianxia world where cultivator clans practice martial arts and magic to attain immortality. The cultivation system includes musical instruments (the flute and guqin are weapons), talismans, summoning of the dead, and meditation. The five great clans (Lan, Jiang, Nie, Jin, Wen) form the political structure of this world.

Danmei Genre

Mo Dao Zu Shi is a pioneering work in the danmei genre, a sub-genre of Chinese literature focused on romantic relationships between male characters. The relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, subtle and slowly developed, has become one of the most famous fictional couples in Chinese popular culture. Danmei, though subject to censorship restrictions in China, has generated a worldwide fan community.

Adaptations

The work has been adapted into a donghua (Chinese anime, 2018), a live-action drama titled The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling, 2019), an audio drama (2018), and a manhua (2017). The Untamed, starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, became a global cultural phenomenon, launched its lead actors' careers, and introduced xianxia culture to an international audience. Each adaptation modified certain elements to comply with Chinese censorship rules.

Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

Author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (also known by the pseudonym MXTX) wrote three major web novels: Mo Dao Zu Shi, Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing), and Ren Zha Fan Pai Zi Jiu Xi Tong (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System). All three have been adapted into donghua and contributed to popularizing the danmei genre globally. Her works have been officially translated into English by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Legacy

Mo Dao Zu Shi paved the way for the international recognition of Chinese web literature and the danmei genre. Its success has inspired a wave of xianxia/danmei web novel adaptations and contributed to the visibility of Chinese culture worldwide.
