Synopsis

Synopsis

In a world of martial and spiritual cultivation, Wei Wuxian is a talented and mischievous young disciple of the Jiang clan. During a great campaign against the Wen clan, a tyrannical clan seeking to dominate the cultivation world, Wei Wuxian is separated from his allies and falls into the Burial Mounds. To survive and protect those he loves, he invents a forbidden path of cultivation: the demonic path, which manipulates the resentful energy of the dead. With this power, he contributes decisively to the fall of the Wen clan.

However, Wei Wuxian's power arouses fear and jealousy. Betrayed by those he considered allies, he is hunted by the great clans and perishes during the siege of the Burial Mounds. Thirteen years later, his soul is summoned into the body of Mo Xuanyu, a rejected disciple. Resurrected in a new form, Wei Wuxian crosses paths with Lan Wangji, the second jade of the Lan clan, a cultivator of absolute righteousness with whom he shared a deep bond in his previous life. Together, they investigate a series of cursed severed arms and uncover a conspiracy dating back to the war against the Wen clan.

Their investigation leads them to revisit past events and confront the secrets the great clans have buried. The truth about those responsible for Wei Wuxian's downfall gradually emerges, revealing the lies and betrayals that have corrupted the cultivation world.

Themes and Influence

The Untamed explores the duality between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, questioning the social norms that define good and evil. The work celebrates unwavering loyalty, deep friendship, and self-sacrifice. The drama had a considerable cultural impact: it launched the international careers of Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, and paved the way for numerous danmei novel adaptations. The soundtrack, particularly the theme 'Wu Ji,' became iconic. The work also helped introduce the xianxia (immortal martial fantasy) genre to a global audience.
