Synopsis

Seoul

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and one of Asia's most dynamic metropolises. With over 10 million inhabitants and 25 million in the metropolitan area, it is the country's political, economic, and cultural center.

History

Seoul has been Korea's capital for over 600 years, since the Joseon dynasty established it as capital in 1394 under the name Hanyang. The city was devastated during the Korean War (1950-1953), changing hands four times between North Korean and UN forces. Postwar reconstruction, supported by the Korean 'economic miracle,' transformed Seoul into a world-class metropolis within decades.

Historical Heritage

Despite rapid modernization, Seoul has preserved five royal palaces from the Joseon dynasty: Gyeongbokgung (the largest), Changdeokgung (UNESCO-listed), Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, and Gyeonghuigung. Bukchon Hanok Village, with its traditional houses (hanok), offers a glimpse of life under the Joseon dynasty. Jongmyo Shrine, dedicated to royal spirits, is also a World Heritage site.

Modern Districts

Gangnam, made globally famous by PSY's 2012 hit, is the business and luxury district. Hongdae is the heart of the independent and artistic scene. Myeongdong is the shopping and K-beauty mecca. Itaewon is the international and multicultural quarter. Dongdaemun is a fashion and design center with its famous Dongdaemun Design Plaza by Zaha Hadid.

Hallyu and Culture

Seoul is the epicenter of the hallyu wave. The studios of major K-pop agencies (HYBE, SM, YG, JYP) are in Seoul, as are K-drama production studios. The city houses numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters, including the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and the National Museum of Korea. The dining scene includes Michelin-starred restaurants and vibrant street markets like Gwangjang.

Technology and Innovation

Seoul is one of the most connected cities in the world, with free Wi-Fi coverage in public spaces and transportation. The city houses Samsung and LG headquarters and is a global hub for technological innovation. Seoul's subway is one of the most modern and extensive in the world.

Contemporary Seoul

The Cheonggyecheon Stream, once buried under a highway, has been restored into a linear urban park, becoming a symbol of the city's ecological modernization. Seoul regularly hosts international events and continues to attract millions of tourists each year, drawn by its unique blend of tradition and modernity.
