Synopsis
In 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm called the Second Impact that devastated Antarctica and killed half the world's population, Tokyo-3 is targeted by attacks from gigantic, enigmatic creatures called Angels. The paramilitary organization NERV, led by the cold and manipulative Gendo Ikari, is the only force capable of fighting them using Evangelions — giant bio-organic robots that can only be piloted by selected teenagers.
Shinji Ikari, aged 14, Gendo's son whom he hasn't seen in years, is summoned to Tokyo-3 to pilot Eva-01. Shy, anxious, and seeking his father's approval, Shinji reluctantly agrees. He is joined by Rei Ayanami, the enigmatic and silent pilot of Eva-00, and Asuka Langley Sohryu, the gifted and fiery pilot of Eva-02. As the battles against the Angels intensify, the series increasingly focuses on the fragmented psychology of its characters.
The second half of the series delves into the traumas, neuroses, and dysfunctional relationships of the characters. The Human Instrumentality Project — the secret plan of NERV and the organization SEELE — aims to merge all human consciousnesses into a single entity. The final two episodes, entirely introspective and produced with limited resources, sparked enormous controversy while becoming legendary.
Themes
Evangelion explores depression, existential anxiety, the need for human connection, and the fear of rejection. The work deconstructs mecha genre tropes by presenting traumatized rather than heroic pilots. References to Kabbalah, psychoanalysis (Freud, Lacan), and Christian theology enrich a narrative that questions the meaning of existence and the value of individuality against collective dissolution.
Production
Created and directed by Hideaki Anno, who was himself going through severe depression, the series was produced by Gainax and aired on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. Budget constraints led to radical artistic choices, particularly in the final episodes. Two films — Death & Rebirth (1997) and The End of Evangelion (1997) — offered an alternative conclusion. The Rebuild of Evangelion film series (2007-2021) reinterpreted the story in four feature films produced by studio Khara, founded by Anno.
Cultural Impact
Evangelion is considered one of the most influential works in animation history. It triggered a paradigm shift in anime, paving the way for darker, more psychological narratives. The franchise has generated billions of dollars in merchandise. The work has influenced countless creators in animation, film, music, and video games. The character of Rei Ayanami created an entire archetype in Japanese fiction. Evangelion remains a subject of analysis and debate thirty years after its broadcast.
