Synopsis
In 2010 by the Imperial calendar, the Holy Britannian Empire has conquered Japan and renamed it Area 11, stripping its citizens of their rights. Lelouch vi Britannia, son of the ninety-eighth emperor Charles zi Britannia, was exiled to Japan with his blind and paralyzed sister Nunnally after their mother's assassination. Living under the name Lelouch Lamperouge, he is a brilliant but cynical high school student who secretly dreams of destroying Britannia.
His life changes when he meets the mysterious C.C., an immortal young woman who grants him the power of Geass: the ability to give an absolute command to anyone he makes eye contact with, once per person. Adopting the masked identity of Zero, Lelouch creates the Order of the Black Knights and leads a rebellion against Britannia, using his strategic intelligence and Geass as weapons. He faces his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi, a Japanese man who chose to reform the empire from within by becoming the pilot of the Lancelot, an elite mecha.
The second season, R2, escalates the stakes with revelations about Lelouch's mother's death, Emperor Charles's Ragnarok Connection, and the emergence of the emperor as a cosmic antagonist. The narrative culminates in the Zero Requiem, a sacrificial plan where Lelouch crowns himself world emperor to concentrate all of humanity's hatred upon himself, before being publicly assassinated by Suzaku disguised as Zero, giving the world a fresh start.
Themes
Code Geass is a reflection on ends and means, terrorism and resistance, and the nature of power. Lelouch embodies the revolutionary's dilemma of willingness to commit immoral acts for a noble goal, while Suzaku represents the idealist who refuses to sacrifice principles even if it means slower change. The work questions the legitimacy of political violence, the burden of deception and personal sacrifice as the ultimate political act. Geass itself is a metaphor for corrupting power: the more Lelouch uses it, the more he loses control of his own humanity.
Production
Code Geass was created as an original anime by Sunrise, with Goro Taniguchi directing, Ichiro Okouchi writing the screenplay and the renowned artists of the CLAMP group handling character design. This choice of CLAMP gave characters distinctive elongated proportions that became a visual trademark of the series. The first season of 25 episodes aired in 2006-2007, followed by R2 (25 episodes) in 2008. Kotaro Nakagawa and Hitomi Kuroishi's music blends epic orchestrations with intimate themes. The series was later extended with compilation films and a sequel film, Lelouch of the Re;surrection (2019).
Cultural Impact
Code Geass was a commercial phenomenon in Japan, generating billions of yen in merchandise and regularly ranking in best anime popularity polls. Lelouch is often considered one of the most brilliantly written anime protagonists, and his phrase 'All Hail Lelouch' became iconic. The series' ending, the Zero Requiem, is frequently cited as one of animation's finest conclusions, comparable to works like Death Note. The work influenced many subsequent political and strategic anime and remains a pillar of the mecha genre.
